Welcome Dave Manelski!

Monday, April 7th, 2008

screenshotIt gives me great pleasure to welcome Dave Manelski as the newest member of the ONE/Northwest CRM team! Dave started today and even had a nice flat panel monitor when he sat down at his desk. The computer will be here any day now…

We’ve known Dave for about 6 years now, as a client and most recently as a contractor. Dave will be jumping in to run Salesforce projects with us, and I’m excited for him to get up to speed on the particulars of consulting on the platform. At Dave’s previous job, he did all things technical, including leading a project moving from a home-grown Access database to a proprietary system for tracking workplace giving. He’s shown great skill and aptitude in Plone consulting for us, as well as deep understanding of nonprofits and how they work. I’m excited to unleash him on the Salesforce.com platform!

Welcome aboard Dave!

Lobbyists and Visualizing Relationships

Relationships are tough to convey. Text doesn’t really get at it–pictures of connectedness often show interlinks more concretely than descriptions can. But relationship networks get very complex very rapidly. The dense web of interconnectedness of people is muddling if shown in too much detail. The tough thing in showing relationships is to get to the level of detail that makes your case, but doesn’t overwhelm, or dilute the story you are trying to tell.

Media Matters has a simple relationship diagram showing John McCain’s close advisors and their connections to lobbying and corporations. Their goal is straightforward, and I think they do a pretty good job of presenting the information. In looking at this diagram, I wanted to see the next level of connectedness–I noticed lots of folks were connected to Airbus, for example, so I wanted to see the relationship from the other direction. But I get why they didn’t create a drill down to that next level. In this case, I think simplicity wins out in this case.

Vertical Response and Salesforce

I’ve written a post for Sonny over at the great nonprofitcrm.org blog cataloging my understanding of how the email tool Vertical Response works with Salesforce.com. Check it out and add nonprofitcrm.org to your feed reader!
