I like to think I’m pretty even-handed in my blogging about Salesforce.com. I’m clearly a big fan, but I think I give them a hard time when I think it will help the app, platform, or business model change for the better.
Recently, I took Salesforce.com to task for a long standing annoyance having to do with picklists and formula fields.
I was cranky because it’s one of the few places in the platform where I have to write very inefficient code. I was also cranky because we’re absolutely cranking on projects right now. My team has 10 clients in play right now. Any inefficiency stands out.
But new efficiencies also stand out, and the new Page Layout editor is an amazing advance for Salesforce.com.
Page Layouts are the visible face of the application. They are very important to get right. But there are literally hundreds of settings on each Page Layout, and because of this they are very hard to manage.
The new Page Layout editor is an amazing piece of VisualForce. It makes the complex job of managing Page Layouts much more efficient, and gives us more control than we had before. I’ve been doing a ton of Page Layout design and modification for a number of projects, and this tool is amazing.
Thanks to the folks on the declarative side of the Salesforce team!
