Install Timelines today!

Salesforce.com employee Ron Hess took the Timeline S-Control that I built last year and rewrote it. It’s a thing of beauty now and it’s free for the installing. Just put it on the detail page for Contacts, Accounts, Opportunities, and Cases and see all the relevant info in a left to right, scrollable Timeline.

This needs to be seen to be believed. You basically add a whole new way of navigating data by installing this package. Really shows the future of mashups as UI elements.

Thanks again to the folks at SIMILE and thanks Ron for making it awesomer than I ever could.

steve, i’ve loved this control since i first saw it at dreamforce, and was obviously excited to see this post. i immediately ran over to appexchange, loaded it into my sandbox, and i got a bunch of errors related to “WhatId”. i am not sure if this actually needs to be created as a field on my object or what. i am placing the scontrol on my contact record. both the contact and the activity records are customized, but i am logged in as an admin so i would think that the data required could be accessed. any ideas?

WhatId is a standard field on Activities (it holds the Id of whatever your relating the Activity to (Account, Opp, Campaign). WhoId is it’s counterpart that does the same thing but holds the Id of a Lead or Contact you are relating to.

I would post to the sf.com developer boards with your error–I know Ron Hess reads them and since it’s his code he might be able to help. I know he’d be interested to hear of any bugs or configuration issues.

Very cool - can definitely see some great uses for this!

Question though - seems to be displaying my SF object data ok (e.g. in Opty Screen, it shows stages, activities), but the timescale information at the bottom of the control (year, month etc) isn’t there. What do I need to do to make sure I can see what timeline it is working to? Is there a setting I need to configure?

Ok - worked out the problem - if you create it as an inline s-control, you need to make sure you change the defaut height of the section to be bigger than default (200) - set mine to 400 and now looks great!
