Thanks Thomas, I would love to see this feature! Maybe in Spring '07 the Campaign Source fields on Opportunity could be added to the Opportunity report sets? Seems like an easier change...

The feature you are are looking for in the "I want to set up the report wizard differently for users" is called the "Custom Report Types"... idea http://ideas.salesforce.com/article/show/22239
This is designed to let people set up the list of fields they want, from the linked objects they want (with some restrictions). It isn't scheduled for Sprint 07, but is something that is under active consideration for a future release. We'd talked about this feature at dreamforce (at the "Analytics - meet the PM" session).
There was one set of fields improved in Winter '07 - on the User report (on for Administrators). This brought all the fields on the interface into the report type.

When looking at the list, you should look for ideas that have the text "(Coming in Spring '07)" in the title. This search is picking up some ideas that aren't part of Sprint 07, but where people have asked for it to be in the comments (the last 2 when I looked).
